How to split power from an existing line?

both lines then will be going to their own switch. How to split power from an existing line?
This question is rather generic (without details) so I'll give you an answer that might apply to your particular situation.

I am assuming you have 3 wires in one shelth (romex) coming from the source, that is, black, white, and bare. I am also assuming the line can carry sufficient current for your intended purpose. I am also assuming, this line is connected to something at the other end.

If this is a situation, you *could* cut the wire at a convinient place, such as an attic space AFTER turning off the circuit breaker, then install a junction box in inspectable place. Plastic ones are easiest to handle. Metal ones might require additional parts to protect the wire. You must place this box where it can be inspected. Do not place this in the wall and drywall over it. Feed both end of the wire into this junction box, then strip them. Feed another set of wires into this box.

At this moment, you have 3 wires coming into this box. Make sure you securely mount the box, and securly attach the wire onto a stud or something so it won't move or pull out.

Then, inside the box, you'll strip and twist together the same colored wires and cut it exposing about 1'; of the twisted portion. Take a twist nut, either red or yellow in color - exact color depends on size of the wire..... more likely to be yellow one than the red one. (color denotes the size of wires and the number it can accomodate) Twist on the wire nut, making sure there are no visible bare wire from either black or white wire. Bare wires are just bare. Twist together and put a wire nut on it.

Now cover the box.

If this is too much for you to handle, hire an electrician. You could also go to home center and ask the staff there. Most of them are qualified to give you hints. Depending on your state, you may or may not need permits, and you may or may not be allowed to do your own electrical work.

Hope this helps. How to split power from an existing line?
