What damage would I make if I cut a tree's roots above ground that are getting to close to my split level home?

I have two huge trees in my front yard. On of them, it's roots (one above ground) is getting to close to my home. Can I cut that root and not damage the tree? I don't want it to be weak and fall on my house the next thunderstorm. Please help meWhat damage would I make if I cut a tree's roots above ground that are getting to close to my split level home?
a trees feeder roots are under ground cutting thee above ground root should not hurt the tree.
