I really need to get all of my splits down! I usually hold each side for 2 minutes, do some other stretches, and then go back and hold each side for 2 minutes again. I know a lot of people that sit in them for like a half an hour! I have a really short attention span and I start getting really bored. It also hurts a ton!How long should I stretch my splits?
Back in my cheerleading days we used to have to sit in them for half an hour, a couple times we'd even had our coaches come and sit on our backs for a minute (yes I know this sounds like abuse, I am not recommending it!)
I would just say to do it for as long as you can tolerate it, try to do it while you watch tv or work on homework. Work on your center splits too, that will help both sides.

It shouldn't really hurt as bad as you think. You probably need to stretch your legs more before doing the split again. You shouldn't need to feel pain. If your tendons are stretched completely, it doesn't hurt. Something to do is to stretch your legs into a little smaller than a straddle and bend one leg in like a butterfly and bend your head towards the other. Once you can do that with your toes pointed, do it with your foot flexed up to stretch the tendons more. Then try it again for maybe a minute and a half or two. See if it hurts any less. Good luck!
well actually, 2 minutes is not very good. it may seem like it becuase its a longer period of time, but it really isnt. you should opt for holding them for 1 minute each and then rest for about 30 seconds and then do it again. if you hold it all at once, your muscles surprisingly dont get stretched as much as they do with a break. it just strains them with the 2 minutes. so opt for 1 minute with 30 second breaks. hope this helps..
if you stretch too much you actually tighten your muscles rather than loosen (i know that's weird) practice everyday and i agree with the others thirty seconds is probably plenty... but stretch before doing them so you don't pull anything (owww!)
What your doing is actually okay but keep your arms in the air almost touching your ears so your weight is pushing you down. Do that at least three times a day and hold it for a minute or more.
2 min. is not that good, but by stretching more you can nimble yourself more and you can last 30 min. or more.
2 minutes is good just do them often
