im on abit of a budget and am looking to buy a three piece leather suite. i have toddlers in the house and want something long lasting.
i was going to go for corrected grain/split leather but im confused now.
ive heard split leather is scratched easily but ive also heard that corrected grain leather is best for toddlers.
please help! What type of leather is best with toddlers in the house? ive heard split leather scratches easily.?
Hello
Corrected grain pigment leather will be the most durable type if you have children.
Split leather is not as durable, it is finished in the same way as corrected grain but because it is made from the bottom split of the hide it does not have the integrity of the top grain. In the UK split leather cannot be used on contact areas of the suite and is used on the outside backs and arms.
Some suites will be made from both corrected grain and split leather, some from corrected grain all over and some from leather and leather match (vinyl).
Go for the best quality you can afford ( you will get what you pay for) and use good quality products to look after it.
As soon as you buy it use Leather Protector, this will inhibit dirt and oils from penetrating the leather and will make anything that is spilt easier to wipe up and clean.. Use foam leather cleaner for cleaning or Lazy Leather which is good for on going regular maintenance. Any leather that is looked after properly will last. DO NOT use baby wipes, conditioners, saddle soap, anything containing waxes, oils or silicones, or any other of the household products people recommend, believe me we have seen the damage done by them!!
You will be better getting a dark colour leather if you have children, light coloured ones will be much harder to keep clean for obvious reasons. What type of leather is best with toddlers in the house? ive heard split leather scratches easily.?
You are getting ahead of yourself, in my opinion. Good leather furniture is very expensive and cheap leather furniture is a waste of your money. I understand your frustration with fabric (I raised 5 of my own) but you would be way ahead if went for slip covers for a couple of years. We had a small formal living room with no TV, etc, that the children were not allowed to play in and a family/playroom with couches, TV, dad's recliner, etc. I never bought anything expensive or that I had to worry about for that room. If you have only one living room area, buy what you want and figure on replacing it when the kids are grown. Leather is wonderful, easy to clean and comfortable to lounge on, but it will split and scratch if it is mistreated. And you have a lot of years to go before your children are out of the house. Get what you like and can afford and don't worry about it. Love your kids and teach them well. You only get the one chance. Then worry about the furniture. It's replaceable. The kids are not.
NONE!!!! Toddlers are destructive. Wait until you know they won't destroy it.
