Would Gravy Master be a reasonable substitute for Marmite in a vegetarian split pea soup recipe.?

Gravy Master is a seasoning and browning sauce that contains no meat. It seems to me that it would impart an umami characteristic that is similar to Marmite. I don't want to go buy Marmite, so I am looking for a substitute.Would Gravy Master be a reasonable substitute for Marmite in a vegetarian split pea soup recipe.?
I would say no. Gravy Master is salt sugar and veg flavors. It basically is a gravy adjunct. I very much doubt you would get that Umami flavor you are seeking. Maramite on the other hand is a brewer's yeast derivative and definitely falls into that Umami profile.

Other stuff that falls into that profile would be soy sauce and miso. I am not sure I would use soy in split pea but white miso would bring an interesting and non distracting dimension to the dish.

It probably has some sort of animal by-product in it.

Your best bet is to use a vegetable stock base to be sure that it is acceptable for a vegetarian to eat it. You can add any sort of fresh or dry herbs to it to help impart the ';umami'; you're looking for.

Good luck.
