Split-halves reliability is a way of measuring the internal consistency of a psychological test. If the items measure the same concept, theoretically, scores from one half of a test should correlate highly with the other half. There are other methods of measuring internal consistency; split-halves reliability is just the easiest one to calculate.





One note: since halving the length of a test reduces its reliability (all other things being equal, the longer a test, the more reliableit is), you have to correct for this when calculating the reliability.





There are other kinds of reliability, just to put this in perspective. For example, test-retest reliability measures the stability of scores over time, at least if the construct being measured is something that is supposed to stay consistent over time.What does it mean to split halves in measuring reliability?
